Closure of the Mont-Blanc Tunnel from September 1 to December 12, 2025

Closure of the Mont-Blanc Tunnel from September 1 to December 12, 2025

Full closure of the Mont-Blanc tunnel from September 1 to December 12, 2025

Carte des itinéraires de substitution au tunnel du Mont-BlancFrom Monday, September 1, 2025 at 5 p.m. until Friday, December 12, 2025 at 5 p.m., the Mont-Blanc tunnel will be completely closed to traffic. This exceptional 15-week measure is necessary to continue the renovation of the vault, initiated in autumn 2024.

After the first test phase in 2024 (332 meters renovated), this second campaign aims to refine techniques for a thorough modernization of the infrastructure. The works will therefore cover two gallery sections, totalling 254 meters.

The autumn period was chosen to minimize the impact on traffic and tourism, as the majority of tunnel users are light vehicles.

The Tunnel, inaugurated in 1965, celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and is becoming the first major European tunnel to undertake a deep structural renovation of its vault.

For more information about the works, see the operator’s press release.

How to cross the Alps during the Mont-Blanc tunnel closure?

Several alternative routes are available to cross the Alps, despite the closure of the Mont-Blanc tunnel. We recommend the following itinerary:

Fréjus road tunnel

For heavy goods vehicles, the main alternative route is the Fréjus tunnel, which connects Modane (France) to Bardonecchia (Italy).

Crossing is settled using the same tunnels card as for the Mont-Blanc tunnel.
