The electronic road toll system in France
All vehicles using the conceded motorway network are subject to toll payment.
In France, the electronic toll system works through OBUs interacting with remote antennas when passing through toll stations. This dialog triggers a transaction that is then transmitted by the concessionaire to Eurotoll to be charged.
The amount of road toll invoiced will depend on the vehicle category that can be defined based on 3 criteria:
- The total height of the vehicle
- The permissible gross vehicle weight (GCVWR of the towing vehicle for HGV)
- The number of axles in contact with the ground
